Forgetting a dose, doubling up by accident or losing track of which pills you’ve already taken can turn a daily medication routine into a major source of stress. An automatic pill dispenser may just be the fix for this. These devices sort, store and release your medication — often at pre-set times with alarms or app reminders to keep you on schedule, depending on the model you have.
“[Automatic pill dispensers] are especially beneficial for older adults, patients taking multiple medications daily and caregivers managing a family member’s regimen,” says Dr. Alan Farrell, chief medical officer at Choose Health, an at-home blood testing kit company. “They are also capable of aiding anyone who needs to follow a strict medication schedule.”
Whether you’re managing your own prescriptions or looking out for a loved one’s, we rounded up the best automatic pill dispensers on the market, according to experts and reviewers.
The best automatic pill dispensers
These automatic pill dispensers align with guidance provided by Farrell and other experts on what to look for when shopping (find that below) and have at least a four-star average rating from more than 500 shoppers.
This dispenser organizes and dispenses pills for up to 28 days and has the ability to manage up to six dosages per day. The 28 spacious compartments hold multiple pills each, while flashing lights, a beeping alarm and a locking cover help prevent missed or doubled doses.
Designed with elderly users in mind, this Windtrace dispenser has a 28-slot food-grade plastic tray and locks each compartment until its scheduled alarm, helping to eliminate mix-ups or double dosing. A bright flashing light, loud alarm and extra-large LCD display keep timing clear at a glance.
Like the other dispensers on this list, this one has a 28-slot tray. What distinguishes it from the others is that it can be controlled both through on-device buttons and the accompanying app, letting caregivers set up to six daily alarms, customize medication names and track adherence remotely. Both the device and connected phone alert will sound and light up when it’s time to dispense, while the app logs every dose taken or missed.
This dispenser has a frosted, lockable lid designed to keep medications private, plus a 28-slot tray that fits up to 24 tablets per compartment for maximum storage. Set up to six daily alarms and if you ever have trouble seeing or if the writing on a medication is too small, a built-in magnifying glass can give you a closer view of what dose you’re taking and when.
Unlike electronic dispensers, this MedCenter system relies on 31 individually numbered pill boxes — one for each day of the month — so users simply grab the matching box when the appropriate alarm goes off and flip it to the red side once doses are done. A talking alarm clock announces up to four daily reminders by voice, calling out the time and which dose to take.

How I picked the best automatic pill dispensers
I asked two doctors what key criteria you should focus on when shopping for an automatic pill dispenser. Here is what they suggest:
- Ease of use: The entire point of an automatic pill dispenser is to make taking medication easy. “A device only benefits the user if it is consistently easy for them to operate,” says Farrell. With this in mind, consider if a more basic model will be more useful than models that have tons of bells and whistles (or vice versa).
- Features: Different dispensers will have different features, so you’ll want to think about what will help you the most. “Helpful features include reminders or alarms, a large display and an easy to fill tray,” says Dr. Nneoma Oparaji, a board-certified internal medicine physician based in Houston.
- Locked compartments: The experts I spoke with highly recommend looking for a dispenser with compartments that lock — especially if the dispenser is for someone who is forgetful or there are small children in the house. Locked compartments can prevent someone from getting into the medication who shouldn’t and also prevent double doses in people who may forget they’ve already taken their meds for the day, says Oparaji.
Frequently asked questions
In most cases, Medicare doesn’t cover automatic pill dispensers. Outside of Medicare, options like Medicaid (in select states), veterans’ benefits and FSA funds may help offset the cost.
Automatic pill dispensers work by organizing medication into individual, timed compartments that release doses on a preset schedule. A caregiver or user preloads pills into slots — typically arranged around a rotating tray or carousel — then programs the device with the number of daily doses and specific times they should be taken (morning and evening markings, for example).
When it’s time for a dose, the dispenser alerts the user, typically by sounding an audible alarm and often flashing a light, and the compartment rotates into position or unlocks so the correct pills can be accessed.
Many models feature a locking cover to prevent tampering or double-dosing, and the alarm continues (often for around 30 minutes) until the dose is retrieved. More advanced, WiFi- or Bluetooth-enabled dispensers go a step further, sending notifications to a caregiver’s phone if a dose is missed.
